Context

During the first week of the Client Brief project I carried out a pre-mortem and also an evaluation of group workings in the last project. These allowed me to analyse the pros and cons to group working and also identify any issues that could arise in the coming weeks of the project. In addition to this, I wrote a cover letter for my application for a job role in the group, this will be assessed and I will be assigned a job role accordingly.

Pre-Mortem

Over the next four weeks of the project I may encounter several issues that may affect my ability to complete the project to a high standard. These issues that I may encounter can include any of the following:

Issue 1: As I have missed the first half of the week due to being in and out of hospital and the doctors, I may be unable to catch up with the workload that I am expected to carry out for this week's worth of assignments meaning that I will not be able to meet the brief requirements, ultimately failing this project. To overcome this I will catch up in any spare time that I have possible, this will ensure that my backlog of work does not spiral out of control and build up to a point that I will become overwhelmed. I cannot really plan to ensure that this does not happen again as I will be visiting the doctor and hospital again for various tests over the coming weeks and months so I will not know the outcome of the tests until I go to the appointments so as far as planning goes I need to complete as much work as possible in my spare time to ensure that I am able to fit work around these appointments.

Issue 2: The second issue that I may face throughout this project is that I will be stuck with a job role that I do not work best in, this may be an issue because we are having to apply to a job role and if there are too many applicants for the role that I want to undertake then I may be stuck with a role that I am weaker at. This will mean that I will not be able to carry out the job role as smoothly as possible, because I am not confident in that role or position. To overcome this issue I need to make my application as eye-catching as possible and ensure that I present my evidence in order to make the best case to what role I am applying for. In order to do this I need to ensure that my portfolio is weighing heavily in my favour to help me when it comes to applying for said role.

Issue 3: The third issue that I can face in this project is that when working in my group we are unable to meet the timeframe, just like last project where we received an extension to the timeframe, this would mean that the group will not be able to meet the brief and ultimately fail the project. In order to overcome this and even plan for this not to be an issue, I will ensure that I always stick to the time constraints and keep helping and encouraging team members in order to complete the project on time and to the brief. In addition, in order to ensure that this will not be an issue we as a team need to communicate and collaborate effectively and ensure that we do not stray from the brief or overscope so that we can be in the best position to meet the brief and timeframe.

Issue 4: Just like last project, the college network and software licenses may be down or inaccessible, this will mean that I will be unable to complete any work needing specialist software such as Maya, Unreal Engine or Blender, this will create a ripple effect because if we are behind on production then we will not be able to catch up with the rest of the project. In order to plan for this or even overcome this issue then I will ensure that during this time I work on other areas of the project that do not require this software so that when it comes to completing that area of work I can focus on the work that needs the software. In addition, I can also work on elements that require this software at home so that I will not be backed up on the project work.

In order to evidence any issues that may arise and evidence how I overcame them, I will include any problem solving in my weekly journals and attach any photo or video evidence to show the issue and how I overcame it to ensure that it will not arise again.

Group Work Evaluation (Last Project)

Over the course of last project I feel that working in a group had it faults and difficulties, for example when it came to communicating as a group, I found it hard to express my opinions or creative ideas to the whole group because we had a group chat that allowed us to communicate but only two of us were actively using the chat to communicate and keep on track with new ideas or even help with issues in development or planning. We also used a trello board in order to track progress and this yet again worked well but only for me and another team member as the third frequently did not use the chat or trello and was ineffective at communicating with the group affecting our outcome and also workflow. As much as I helped and encouraged the team members, they were still lacking in work. I feel that communication was challenging because they seemed to not listen or even respond to communication well resulting in a project that was incomplete by the original deadline. This also affected my workflow as I was spending too much time getting the group up to speed with what we were doing and what needed to be done due to the lack of communication and even updates to the tracker, this ultimately slowed down my workflow. To overcome this we held group meetings regularly to keep on top of the work and the progress and then we also kept working together to share code and art to speed up production further in order to meet the new deadline.

Overlooking the negatives, working collaboratively in a group also came with a few advantages, for example we were able to collaborate with art and also help each other on tricky areas of production such as coding and implementing mechanics such as health pickups and rigging the enemy AI correctly. One major positive was that we were able to share our knowledge to better improve each others knowledge of game design and development, this was a huge advantage that played in our favour by the end of the project because we were able to share our research and experimentation to quickly learn new techniques such as adding sound to an Unreal project, so that we could utilise this going into development. This helped greatly when it came to meeting the new deadline and crafting a better outcome because by the end we were able to sit down as a group and explain how to implement a feature or mechanic that would be needed, helping to craft a more well rounded and structured outcome compared to if we spent longer on researching the techniques separately and then each using a different method. This was also a good learning experience because I was able to learn about new techniques that I previously had not worked with before such as Sound design in Unreal and using an in-engine tool to change the scene points of an object.

Based upon previous group working experience on this course, I have been able to see that communication, collaboration and effective planning have all helped to create a smoother flow of work and also to better improve the workflow of the group overall. By going from this, in this group project I will adopt the following in order to ensure that we meet the deadline and brief effectively, the first work method will be using a trello board or some form of tracker. By using this method the team will be able to track progress and ensure that each team member is able to see and complete the tasks that they have been set, as I said previously in the last project we used this and it proved somewhat effective, I was able to effectively use this tool as well as another team member and this helped us to manage our time and plan what tasks were important and needed to be focused on first. This will ultimately help for the team to track and manage time so I will be adopting this in this project too.

The second work method that I will also bring into this project is team meetings, team meetings allowed us to communicate our ideas and also to keep on top of workflow and tasks that were outstanding. The meetings also helped us to collaborate engine methods such as mechanics and features so this will be helpful to improve knowledge on game development and will ultimately help to meet the deadlines. In addition, as this project will be made up of a team with different job roles then it is essential that the artist communicates with the game designer to ensure that an art style matches the design set out in the GDD. In addition to this, the programmer will also need to communicate with the designer to ensure that a feature matches with what is set out in the GDD. So going into this project I will ensure that we have some form of effective communication such as meetings or general group discussions when a team member is unsure of a design or working of a mechanic.

Going from my personal workflow and work ethic in the last project, I would say that that was consistent and on par with that of previous projects as I was able to effectively manage my time throughout, leading to me having more time to help with issues in the group. However, going into this project I will ensure that I am more communicative than I previously was to ensure that I can express my opinions when needed and also to help with an array of issues that may arise during the course of the group project.

I am putting myself forward for the following role of game designer for this collaborative project because I love designing level blueprints and being able to craft a gameplay flow through level design. In addition, as you can see from my portfolio and previous work I take care and passion in creating level designs and prototyping with new mechanics or UX designs in order to craft a more effective player experience and gameplay flow, this is a huge part of my experience and I will be able to utilise this again for this project helping to design a polished and well rounded player experience to meet the clients brief. In addition to this, I have consistently carried out research and experimentation into new areas to improve my game design as a whole and I believe that I have the ability and new required skills to effectively translate this in my group workings, to further elevate this I have applied for many University courses in this subject field and have already been offered two full unconditional offers, this goes to show that my workflow and game design knowledge has been regarded as a high standard.
